Last year we saw Alex McLean hold aloft the KALYNA trophy. The weekend at Meadow Springs was a great success and everyone seemed to find the course quite challenging but Alex seemed to have everyone’s measure and ended up winning by 15 strokes from Emilio
Di Labio, with three others being within 3 strokes of Emilio.
I would like to thank KALYNA for their support
throughout the year as our sole sponsor and would like to remind Golf Club
members to support KALYNA by becoming members of the Credit Union
and repaying their faith in the Club.
It appears the Christmas break did wonders for Andrew Hurba. He came out with all guns blazing and demolished the course with a wonderful 65.3 (net). Just behind Andrew was Kevin Porter on 65.8 and Emilio (Muggsy) Di Labio on 68.8.
It appears the course was fairly easy that day, as all but two players came in under 74 net. It appears the handicaps are working well.
The other winners on the day were;
Hole #8 Nearest the Pin - Simon Korzec
Hole #16 Nearest the Pin - Ludwik Majewski
Hole # 18 Longest Drive - Ludwik Majewski
This year brings a new look to the Club. Recently, several members met to discuss ways to increase the number of members that participate at each game and to ensure all players play to their optimum level.
It was agreed to incorporate a points system which would culminate in a Champions Trophy for the most consistent player for the year.
It was decided to allocate points for the most important facets of the game and the player with the most points at the conclusion of the season will be presented with the Champion’s Trophy.
Points will be allocated on the following facets of each round:

Another innovation for this year is the commencement of Match Play.
This is a head-to-head match between two players. It will be played off handicap, this requires the lower handicap player giving three-quarters of the handicap difference to the higher handicap player, the strokes being taken by following the stroke index column on the scorecard.
The matches have been drawn and are as follows;
Match Players
| 1 | Ron Wityk v Andrew Hurba |
| 2 | Ivan McLean v Daniel Rosowski |
| 3 | Bohdan Warchomij v Alex McLean |
| 4 | Ivan Hulyk v Simon Korzec |
| 5 | Ray Baran v Mark McLean |
| 6 | Berehovy v Kevin Porter |
| 7 | Ludwik Majewski v Steve Fairbairn |
| 8 | Emilio Di Labio v Andrew Lozyk |
It was decided that players will have two
club matches to finalise their "match". It was decided that if both players are in attendance for the monthly club game then the match is deemed to be "in play". If the match cannot be played during a regular Club fixture, the two players will be required to complete their match at Maylands GC before the expiry of the Match Play Round.
Using this method, the winner of the Match Play Trophy should be decided at the conclusion of the first round of the Club Championship in October 1999.
The score as scored during Match Play will be counted towards the Champions Trophy and the daily Handicap honours.
Ivan Hulyk has arranged the purchase of twenty NIKE shirts which will be used as our Club Shirt. However the cost of the shirt has grown, due to the better quality of the NIKE brand, and the cost of the shirt is $40.00 and the payment of this amount is required before we can go ahead and buy the shirts. It is imperative that all members give Ivan the $40.00 asap ($30.00 for those who have already given their deposit).

After the first game of 1999, a lot of discussion was held concerning handicaps. It has been agreed to review the handicap calculations for 1998 as it appears an anomaly has been discovered.
Handicaps will be calculated as follows;
for every stroke better than PAR, .3 per stroke will be deducted from the handicap of that player eg if net 68 is scored on a par 72 course, 1.2 will be deducted from that player’s handicap. If PAR is not matched, then .2 is the maximum that a player’s handicap can be increased by eg net 82 is scored then that player’s handicap will increase by a maximum of .2 only.
Therefore, after having reviewed the results of 1998 and the first round of 1999, I have calculated the official handicaps to be (subject to verification);
| 13.9 | 13.9 Ludwik Majewski |
| 18.4 | 18.4 Alex McLean |
| 27.4 | 27.4 Ivan McLean |
| 28.4 | 28.4 Kevin Porter |
| 28.7 | 28.7 Emilio Di Labio |
| 33.9 | 33.9 Andrew Hurba |
| 36.0 | 36.0 Ray Baran |
| Andrew Berehovy | |
| Steve Fairbairn | |
| Ivan Hulyk | |
| Simon Korzec | |
| Andrew Lozyk | |
| Mark McLean | |
| Bohdan Warchomij | |
| Ron Wityk |
